2. Social Issues Workshops

There will be eight additional half-day workshops in topics relevant to front-line housing staff in the Downtown Eastside

ie: mental illness, drug use, dealing with verbal and physical aggression, accessing community resources etc.

The specific topics chosen will be based on the interests of the program participants as well as a survey of the specific needs (sent out by fax).

3. Support for Participants

Participants will receive regular, ongoing individual support from a program worker throughout the project to bridge classroom sessions with the realities of the job. Work Experience placements may be provided.

§ There are fourteen (14) positions available in the program.

§ Selection criteria include personal suitability, relevant life experience, and an ability to commit to both school and work responsibilities.

§ Completion of grade 12 is not necessary, but participants must possess good oral, reading and writing skills.

§ Work schedules must be flexible as some classes may be held during work hours. There will be a limited amount of resources available to cover the cost of a replacement worker for these times.

The first step to apply is to fill out the application or fax a letter of interest and resume.

This program will operate from September 2005 to June 2006 and offers fourteen training positions for persons working in the Downtown East Side Community.

Vancouver Agreement LogoThe SRO Training Program is funded by the Vancouver Agreement, an urban development initiative of the governments of Canada, British Columbia and Vancouver

There will be two registration intakes to the program, September and January.

The Program components are:

1. Vancouver Community College Building Management Certificate Program

This program is designed for building managers and caretakers who wish to improve their skills. Participants are trained in building service management, leadership, landlord-tenant law, basic building maintenance, fire safety, security matters, office forms and record keeping.

Supervisory skills covered include: goal setting, problem solving techniques, staff supervision and tenant/owner relations.

Graduates are prepared for building supervisory roles in hospitals, schools and commercial buildings, as well as on-site manager positions in apartment buildings.

The program is recognized and supported by The Professional Association of Managing Agents (PAMA),the Canadian Administrative Housekeeping Association (CAHA), the Canadian Building Services Association (CBSA) and the BC Apartment Owners and Managers Association.

The VCC Courses are

Building Cleaning - Methods, Equipment, Supplies and Safety,

Law and Tenant Relations:Building Maintenance and Cost Control

Building Service Management.  

They will be held evenings and Saturdays.
